Distinguishing a target account from a buyer persona

A target account is a specific organisation; a buyer persona describes a type of person. Learn what each can and cannot establish before outbound contact.

A target account is a specific organisation chosen for potential sales work. A buyer persona is a research-informed description of a type of person who may buy, influence or use an offer. The account answers “which organisation?”; the persona helps identify which responsibilities and questions to investigate. Neither proves a named person has a problem or wants contact.

Keep four levels separate

ItemWhat it describesDecision it helps with
Ideal customer profileA type of organisation suited to the offerWhich organisations belong in the candidate pool?
Target accountA specific organisation being assessedWhat account facts need checking?
Buyer personaA pattern across people, informed by researchWhich responsibilities and questions may matter?
Named contactAn actual person at the accountWhat is their verified role and appropriate next step?

A target account is an instance, not another name for an ICP. It can appear to match the profile while a necessary requirement remains unknown. Record that uncertainty rather than treating the label as proof.

Target Account vs Buyer Persona: Key Differences

  • Target AccountA specific organisation being assessed for potential sales. Answers: 'Which organisation?'
  • Buyer PersonaA research-informed description of a type of person who may buy, influence or use an offer. Answers: 'Which responsibilities and questions matter?'

Check the account before assuming a role matters

Suppose a hypothetical supplier helps organisations reconcile transactions from a particular operating system. A retailer might match a broad industry description, but the supplier still needs to establish whether the required system and process exist. Finding a finance director at the retailer answers neither question.

If the account is plausibly suitable, investigate who owns the relevant work. A finance director, systems lead and operations manager might consider different parts of a proposal. A persona can suggest questions about their responsibilities; it cannot establish how this organisation assigns them.

How to Validate Account Fit Before Outreach

  1. Confirm organisational fit with ICPCheck if the account matches the ideal customer profile based on industry, size, and operational needs.
  2. Investigate relevant systems and processesVerify whether the required operating system or process exists at the account.
  3. Identify decision-makers by roleDetermine who owns the relevant work—e.g., finance director, systems lead, operations manager.
  4. Verify contact’s role and compliance readinessConfirm the named contact’s actual role and ensure outreach complies with Australian spam laws (e.g., CASL/ACMA rules).

Use personas as research prompts

Build personas from customer conversations and observed decision processes. Describe recurring responsibilities, questions and constraints. Avoid invented preferences, personalities or claims about a named person’s frustrations. Where the evidence comes from a small customer group, treat the pattern as provisional.

“Would the person responsible for monthly reconciliation need to assess the data connection?” is a useful question. “This director is frustrated by reconciliation” is an unsupported assertion unless the director has said so.

Before outreach, keep account-fit evidence separate from a contact’s verified role. Research an unresolved account requirement; confirm unclear responsibility; stop prospecting an account the current offer cannot serve.

Before sending any commercial message, check the spam and privacy obligations that apply, and keep that compliance check separate from account-fit research. A public job title is a research input, not a substitute for that check.
